The Hearty-counsels Of Friendship

“Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel” (Prov. 27:9).

The beauty of applying a good designer perfume on a fabric (my apologies if your belief-system disallow perfumes) is not just in the pleasantness of their odor, but in the lingering aroma that is still felt even after a couple of days of applying the said perfume.

Take for instance you opened your dress closet with the aim of sorting out things to take to the laundry…and within a fleeting second you perceive the disarming aroma of your favorite designer perfume…And a smile of joy plays around your lips because of the pleasant memory that that sweet-smelling odor brought to your thinking…Then you gently and thoughtfully shake your head sideways and smile again. That was precisely how I felt this morning when I logged online to read the precious birthday greetings from my online friends (many of whom I have not really meant in person).

But before you begin to wander what perfumes have to do with us today, I will make haste to let you know that I started thinking of perfumes this morning when I ventured to meditate on the scripture above in Proverbs 27:9.

As you can see, that scripture clearly says in a nutshell that the sweetness in the “hearty-counsel” of a friend can be likened to the pleasant aroma that comes from either a perfume or an ointment. In other words, such hearty counsels, suggestions, prayers, prophecies, good wishes etc. from a sincere friend do not just have a note of pleasantness to them, they also boast of medicinal values.

The impact of the two-fold benefits in the hearty counsel of a friend or friends dawned on me this morning in a special way when I began to read the birthday prayers, suggestions, good wishes, prophecies, etc. of my Facebook friends and the hearty-counsels of those who either chit-chatted with me over the phone or online on the occasion of my birthday yesterday. I must admit that they were as pleasant as they were also encouragingly-soothing in nature. They helped to re-echo the inspiring view of the late American inspirational columnist, William Arthur Ward who submitted that:

“Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.”

It is from this perspective of not wanting to ‘hold on’ to the whirlpool of gratitude in me that I have chosen to ‘let them out’ via this medium. I do recognize that French writer and novelist Alexandre Dumas was also correct when he wrote that:

Even after having paid up your bill to a benefactor, you will still owe the debt of gratitude…and the debt of gratitude, is the one debt you can never finish paying.”

Permit me, therefore, to make an attempt at reducing my debts of gratitude today to you. Permit me to say a big ‘thank you’ for always sparing the time to read my posts day-in-day-out. Permit me to say a big ‘thank you’ for remembering to drop a line of prayer, prophecy, suggestion and encouragement on my Facebook wall yesterday. Permit me to say a big ‘thank you’ for showing through your words and acts that indeed “Advancement is God’s idea and not stagnation.” Permit me to say a big ‘thank you’ to you today for being vessels of encouragement in the hand of God.

And before signing off today, can I also ask your permission to speak a word of favor, success, health, joy, prosperity and all-round advancement into your life and destiny? If that permission is granted, then I say to you under God that:

“All-round advancement will by your portion from today, in Jesus name, Amen!”
